Khan Academy Overview.
Khan Academy is a non profit educational organization, created in 2006 by a Bangaldeshi American educator Salman Khan, a graduate of MIT and Harvard Business School.The website supplies a free online collection of more than 3,200 micro lectures via video tutorials stored on YouTube teaching mathematics, history, healthcare and medicine, finance, physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, economics, cosmology, organic chemistry, American civics, art history, macroeconomics and computer science.
Khan Academy started on a very subtle and unintentional note(regarding what it is today) when the founder salman khan was tutoring his cousin Nadia some basic mathematical concepts, it is then when he extended his tutorials on youtube for his other cousins and it was an instant hit amongst them, their popularity and testimony forced Salman to quit his job as a Hedge Fund Analyst and fully devote his time in this video tutorials, One thing led to another and this new concept of education hit people instantly and with support from companies like Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Google that Khan Academy soared new heights. If we get into the statistics to understand the scalability of this unique venture of Education is that it has 3000+ videos on youtube with 3.7 million viewing these videos in a month, having around 88 million lessons with 260 million exercises and growing at a tremendous rate as I write.
Now there are some things which gives us some learning that "Always Think Big" and that this society has supported an individual in many direct and indirect ways and we are liable to them and we owe them our careers and positions, so now I would be sharing something about Khan Academy and its working style and other structural details.
This venture did not become successful on its own but had constant support from Khan's untiring team which is a decentralized team which works with no major co-ordinators but only with contributors, for eg: on the same line as the Mumbai Dabaahwalas network works. The Organizational Structure in this academy is that every person in this organization possesses conceptual, human as well as technical skills as they themselves are the managers,workers and leaders which makes this academy unique, they innovate, improvise and implement all the function required to make their site of best quality and as user friendly as possible, as the users can be from a third world country or even a Harvard graduate. As it is a non profit venture, it is totally run by the donations from users/students/teachers etc and financial backing from corporates like Google. Students can make use of our extensive video library, interactive challenges, and assessments from any computer with access to the web. As the world is poised to be flat the relationships between countries, ideas and cultural exchange is at much faster pace than it was 3-4 decades ago, and thanks to Internet for this. So Mr. Khan took this opportunity with both hands and dedicated his life to this noble cause of betterment of the society without limiting self to any borders or geographies, The respect that he has earned is marvelous. If the world's richest man can be your Fan and is so influenced by your thought process and is ready to support you in anyway he can, this shows that if you fully dedicate yourself to something then sky is the limit for you, and you never know what your true potential is, unless you go out and Unleash it.
